What Is Tepezza®?

Tepezza (teprotumumab-trbw) is an intravenously administered medication that treats both the source, and symptoms, of Thyroid Eye Disease (TED), also known as Graves’ eye disease. For patients with TED, the body’s immune system attacks the tissues behind the eye, which is what causes swelling and discomfort. Tepezza is the first drug approved by the FDA to specifically target both the cause and symptoms of TED.

What is Thyroid Eye Disease?

TED, also known as Graves’ eye disease, Graves’ orbitopathy, and Graves’ ophthalmopathy, is a chronic autoimmune disorder. This means the body’s immune system targets and destroys healthy tissues. While rare, thyroid eye disease can have serious complications.

Thyroid eye disease is typically progressive and often enters a chronic stage where scar tissue leads to ongoing symptoms. Bulging eyes are a common feature in patients with TED—tissues behind the eye swell and push the eye forward.

Other common symptoms include redness, swelling, puffy eyelids, light sensitivity, dry or watery eyes, and pain or pressure. Blurry or double vision may also occur, and in some cases, patients experience complete vision loss.

How Tepezza Works

Tepezza binds to the receptors in the tissue behind the eye, blocking patients’ immune systems from attacking the area. This can result in a reduction of symptoms, including swelling, redness, pain, and eye bulging.

The medication can also alleviate double vision associated with thyroid eye disease, improving patients’ visual abilities.

A typical course of Tepezza includes a series of 8 IV treatments spread evenly across 5 months. Treatment may vary between patients, so it’s important to talk to your doctor about your Tepezza treatment plans.

How to Get Started
